Candido (19th C. French School)
oil on canvas,
Portrait of a sea captain, half length, holding a telescope, with a chart before him,
signed,
29 x 39in.
Estimate £1,500-2,000

Oil on canvas relined thirty years ago or more, canvas firm but with a very slight outward bulge, rather dirty with a fine but stable craquelure running throughout the work, signs of a small 1 inch or less retouch spot just above and to the right of the telescope, more notably signs of retouching running from just beneath the sitters nose vertically downwards through the cravat lace frills and waistcoat down to his wrist, this has been retouched to reasonable effect but now shows due to the lack of craquelure and slight colour differences, overall quality of the work is fair to good however the Candido pinxit inscription on the scroll at the bottom is rather crude and thought to be later, in a very battered 19th century gilt gesso frame, no labels or inscriptions verso.
Comes for sale from a deceased estate.
