A Chinese rosewood, mother of pearl and painted alabaster inset mah jong box, 19th century, the hinged cover painted to an alabaster panel with figures on horseback, a Buddhist lion behind them, within a mother of pearl flower and foliate border, the sides carved in relief with scrolling dragons, the interior with later dividers for displaying snuff bottles, 35.5cm.,

The painted alabaster inset panel has wear to the decoration and a central crack. The interior has been converted to take snuff bottles at a later date, but there are not mah jong tiles, the joints are slightly open on one corner, otherwise good.
