A fine 17th century Italian crimson silk brocade wall hanging, originally woven with gold threads and polychrome silks in a large ornate floral pattern, possibly part of a larger hanging, the front now edged with later narrow bands of woven gold braid across the brocade and down the sides creating a panelled effect, the brocade then backed with thick hessian and lined with plain red silk. Condition - most of the polychrome coloured silks have faded, with just a few areas still showing the original colour., the large gold thread motifs have tarnished and are loose and worn in many areas, the silk backing has torn. All these losses are due to age, use and light. But the overall fabric base is still strong. The hanging may benefit specialist conservation restoration.
