Churchill, Winston Leonard Spencer, (1874-1965) - A typed letter, addressed and signed in black ink, to Lt. Col. G.E.W. Lane: ‘’My dear Colonel Lane, In the pressure of events I have been unable to address myself to your most kind letter of October 12, and to the beautiful and valuable birthday present you have sent me. I accept with pleasure the snuff box, itself a very fine specimen of early eighteenth century English art, and reputed to have belonged to my famous ancestor. [the Duke of Marlborough] I thank you most warmly for your gift and for the thoughts which inspired it. I shall always keep the snuff box with other relics of the great Duke, including a casket of his letters sent to me by Princess Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. Thank you and your Wife and Daughters very much indeed. Yours sincerely, Winston S Churchill’’, one page, on embossed Prime Ministerial headed paper, 4to, one filing hole to top left, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 20 October, 1954, together with original envelope, dated the same day. [Lieutenant-Colonel Geoffrey Ernald William Lane, OBE, JP, The Rifle Brigade], together with sundry documents relating to the Lt. Col. Lane’s family.
