Lot 38 , A Maori Wahaika Tiki hardwood war club 13.25in.
A Maori Wahaika Tiki hardwood war club carved with a full-figure tiki on the blade and tiki head on the base of the handle, 13.25in.
Estimate £500-800
There are natural knots and indentations to the wood. There is a slight split on the leading edge of the club and it looks as though someone has attempted to use the club as a hammer at some stage because there are a number of indentations on each side which look nail-shaped. Otherwise it has a reasonable colour and patina, weight 348 grams. The current owner inherited the club form her late mother so the club can be dated before 1940 so a date of late 19th/early 20th century is likely.
