Lot 1250 , Flemish School The Death of St Sebastian, 18 x 14in.
Flemish School
oil on canvas,
The Death of St Sebastian,
18 x 14in.
Estimate £200-300
Oil on canvas that looks to have been relined 20 years ago or so, canvas has slight undulation to it, paint is rather dull and dirty and would benefit from a clean, a very fine but stable craquelure running through much of the paint I suspect with much of the sky particularly from the top left corner running down to between the branches has been retouched, backing canvas is of a very coarse broad weave and the stretcher is a crude hardwood stretcher perhaps pointing to Italian or Spanish origin rather than Flemish. No further history of this picture is know but it is thought to be a 19th century copy of an earlier work. Comes in a later parcel gilt and ebonised frame which is now a little rubbed.
