Lot 167 , A fine Italian micro-mosaic plaque, Rome, mid 19th century
A fine Italian micro-mosaic plaque, Rome, mid 19th century, the rectangular plaque intricately inlaid with glass tesserae depicting a spaniel resting after a hunt in a pastoral landscape, a captured dove and woodcock in the foreground, measuring 5.5 x 4.0cm, unsigned, later frame
The micromosaic workshops of 19th century Rome produced superb studies of hunting scenes and Roman landmarks, which were popular among Europeans embarking on their 'Grand Tour'. Constructed out of minutely arranged glass and occasionally stone tesserae, similar studies of hunting dogs can be found by prominent Roman micromosaicists including Antonio Aguatti and Gioacchino Barberi among others, to whose work the present study can be favourably compared.
