Lot 73 , A near pair of Regency style bronze Colza oil lamps,
A near pair of Regency style bronze Colza oil lamps, of rhyton form, with boars heads mounts, on square bases, after a design by Giovanni Piranesi, one stamped - MESSENGER - (Thomas Messenger and Sons, Birmingham and London), adapted for electricity.
Estimate £1,000-1,500
These lamps appear to be in the style of Colza rather than actual Colza lamps, the boar headed urns do not have movable lids or any obvious opening to a reservoir. The burners are wired and fitted for electricity, the electricity is possibly a later adaption but certainly these did not ever perform as Colza oil lamps. Condition - an even bronze finish with some oxidisation and dirt, otherwise good. Very minor differences in casting such as width of the scroll above the boar's head. Perhaps they came from a mould at different times.
