Lot 379 , A Japanese coloured ivory model of a partially peeled satsuma, early 20th century, 7cm.
A Japanese coloured ivory model of a partially peeled satsuma, early 20th century, 7cm.
Estimate £600-800
The orange colouring to the upper part of the satsuma has faded, there is a central pierced hole beneath which is carved in naturalistic fashion, it is possible there may have been a stalk sticking out of this at one stage, just next door to this is a tiny hole which is a natural core of the ivory, now lacking its plug, also on the underside is a second pierced hole measuring 4mm diameter which may have had an item mounted on it or where the satsuma was mounted on a stand, it contains some sort of dead insect or fly, also on the peeled section of the skin there is a honeycomb effect, there is also a dead fly within this which would no doubt come out with a blow of compressed air, otherwise a few fine age cracks.
