The 1909 Grand National was won by Lutteur III, at the relatively young age of 5, one of a handful to do so. More significantly, his win was a vindication for French breeders, who had seen the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris and the Grand Hurdle at Auteuil frequently won by channel-crossing English-breds. His sire, St. Damien, won the Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot, and was retired to stud in France; he became the leading sire of jumpers there between 1904 and 1911.
