A carved shell cameo brooch, second half 19th century, set with an oval shell cameo intricately carved to depict a Bacchante wearing a lion skin, within a gold frame in the Archaeological style, with rope twist and grainti decoration, overall length 6.5 x 5.7cm

Condition:
Fine example, the cameo with intricate detailing, some minor hairline age cracks to shell but generally well preserved and in good condition. Crisp detailing to the gold frame, nicely done. Brooch pin of base metal. Unusual remnant of previous fitting by brooch catch, not clear what it was originally. Hook at base intended for pendant, possibly later added. Gross weight 43 grams.
