Together with a receipt purchased from C.C. Tai Gallery, Princes Building, Hong Kong May 27th 1987 and described as Antique Jade figure made of black jade in the Han dynasty.
Compare a similar jade carving of a male figure in Chinese Jade Throughout The Ages, an exhibition organised by the Arts Council of Great Britain and The Oriental Ceramics Society June 1975 Victoria and Albert Museum, item 142 which is described as Eastern Zhou period or Han dynasty 3rd - 1st century BC. The figure's hands are folded into long sleeves and the feet are highlighted with curves in the robes above in a similar way to this lot.
The black ink areas of the stone have some abrasion and blemishes to the top of the figures head, some slight wear to the hat on the top rim on his back and around the base area there is an old shallow chip to the back of the figure which has wear to it with age and another very shallow worn chip on one corner, which aren't particularly significant, otherwise in reasonable condition for its age.
