Alfred Pollentine (1836-1890)
oil on canvas
Doge's Palace and St Mark's Square from the Grand Canal, Venice
signed and dated '94, Frost & Reed label verso
30 x 50in.
Estimate £800-1,200

Oil on canvas which has been relined 20 - 30 years ago or more, canvas now very slightly saggy, paint looks rather dirty and would certainly benefit from a clean, although catalogued as dated '94 we think this is actually '74, please see photographs on the website. One spot of flaked away paint showing in the lower part of the nearest boat on the right hand side, the one with four figures in.
This work comes for sale from a deceased estate and was sold by Frost and Reed and bears their label verso, housed in a later gilt frame which but for a few small chips is in good order.
