oil on canvas
The Royal George on her Return from Ireland with His late Majesty on board and the Liffey Frigate taken aback (having a blue light) off the entrance of the British Channel at 2 o'clock on the morning of the 12th September 1821, by William .. Huggins, Marine Painter to His Majesty
34 x 50in.
Estimate £800-1,200
Oil on original canvas which is now slightly saggy, one patch showing in the sky above the ship on the right, fairly well touched in hard to spot now, old hand inscribed labels verso, one stating Honourable Lady Duncan, the other with details of the work that appears to be the artists labels, old Sotheby's chalk marks from c.2001, and a label Lot 18 25.9.01, a fine craquelure running throughout the paint which is just starting to lift a little and may need some attention, otherwise probably a little dirty, no other faults noted, housed in what looks to the original ornate gilt gesso frame which now suffers from a few losses.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
