A Chinese blue and white ‘figure scene’ jar and cover, Kangxi mark, but circa 1900, painted with alternating panels of two ladies and a scholar in a garden setting and birds amid flowers, within endless knot and ribbon borders, apocryphal four character mark to base, the domed cover decorated with antiques and constellations, height 20.5cm, wood stand, splinter chip to neck re-glued

Provenance - A. E. Bateman; thence by family descent.
Bateman was the representative for the prominent British merchant firm Dodwell & Co. in Kyobashi in the 1920s. The firm operated in Shanghai and Yokohama from the late 19th to mid 20th century, acting as a major import/export and shipping agent.
