Vera Karoly was born in Šahy (now Slovakia) in 1928. During World War II she spent two years in concentration camps, finally in Auschwitz. She attributes her survival to her ability to act as interpreter because of her fluency in several languages. Following liberation, she emigrated to Britain and graduated in fine arts from the Southampton Institute of Higher Education.
