° Tolkien J.R.R - The Hobbit, 2nd edition, 5th. impression, colour frontispiece, illustrations, map endpapers, top edge green, original green pictorial cloth, unclipped dust jacket, 8vo, George Allen & Unwin, London, 1951. Note: A fair copy of the second edition, the fifth printing overall, notable for Tolkien's revisions to Chapter 5, "Riddles in the Dark." While writing The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien recognised inconsistencies in Gollum's character. In the original version, Gollum appeared less deranged and corrupted by the Ring, conflicting with his intense obsession in The Lord of the Rings. To resolve this, Tolkien made significant changes to Chapter 5 in this edition.
