David Smith was born in Lowestoft and exhibited around the world. He wrote several books and travelled as an artist on the QEII, with the British Antarctic Survey and painted the lighthouses for Trinity House.

Condition:
Oil on board in slightly neglected condition, some losses to the paint particularly down the centre with the addition of white mould spores on the surface of the paint notably on the side of the piano, some brown splodged paint marks showing above the sleeping man's head, slight rubbing around the margins, no labels or inscriptions verso, not framed or mounted, the pencil preparatory drawing is on paper laid onto hard board, now rather dirty with vertical water stains running through the work and losses around the margins notably top right corner, 120 x 150cm, again not framed.
