Waugh states that it was very nice to hear from his correspondent again and remarks 'I wish I could do something to amuse your son in England', adding 'He would be very welcome, of course, to come here at any time but I fear that the countryside with a sexaganarian (sic) would not be much fun for him. I have a 16 year old son but he is spending August in France. Margaret, alas, can't do much. She is having a baby shortly…..I don't think she is quite the company he will enjoy at the moment'. Waugh concludes by writing 'I hope that it is unnecessary for me to tell you how disgusted all the English are at the insults offered to your Queen'.
