IAN DONALD UNWIN BSc MPhil FlnstMC
Ian was employed by British Coal from 1974 to 1994 as a Physicist in the Physics and Mathematics Department of The Mining Research and Development Establishment at Bretby, South Derbyshire. On various projects Anemometers for airflow, dust methane gas etc. Significant research into the underlying cause of the malfunction of commercial sensors when applied to fast moving and dense smoke clouds. Other projects resulted in the development of intrinsically safe instrumentation for underground environments, while research into the generation of seismic waves in coal seams resulted in a patent application.

The Mining Research and Development Establishment won the Queens award for Technical Achievement in 1991 for its extraction drum for dust and frictional ignition control.
Ian was part of the team that did the Michael Faraday, Power Below UK lectures for British Coal 1979-80, travelling the UK.

1994 to 2000 Ian worked for Flametec, Nottinghamshire. A Research Establishment in Chislehurst, then PERA a research establishment in Melton Mobray, Leicestershire.
2000 – 2018 Ian was employed by Servomex Group Ltd, Technical Centre, Jarvis Brook Crowborough, East Sussex as Lead Compliance Engineer.

He was responsible for ensuring that Servomex gas analysers satisfy international standards and comply with European Union Directives. These cover a wide range of considerations including electrical safety compliance, hazardous substances and technical aspects such as electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). He was one of the few experts on (EMC). An active member of the UK’s instrumentation, control, automation and laboratory technology industry trade association GAMBICA. A representative on a number of British Standards Institution committees.

In 2011 he was awarded the Alec Hough-Grassby Memorial Award by the Institute of Measurement and Control, which is given to one person each year in the UK. In 2013 he was made a fellow of the Institute of Measurement and Control.
