Lot 282 , An important collection of Chinese woodblock printed sutras, Ming dynasty, 15th century and later, the largest sutra 30cm
An important collection of Chinese woodblock printed sutras, Ming dynasty, 15th century and later, some bearing the reign mark of Hongxi (1424-25) including a Heart Sutra and 'precious objects' of coins, fabric and a gilt pewter bell pendant, the largest sutra 30cm
Estimate £1,000-1,500
Provenance: a gift to the present vendor from the specialist Chinese works of Art dealer John Sparkes in the late 1950s/early 1960s. The photographs included with this lot show where the sutras, scroll and 'precious objects' were removed from the core of an early Ming dynasty life-size polychrome wood figure of a luohan.
The paper of the sutras and scrolls is very delicate. The pages of the sutras fold in concertina and in many instances they have split apart. Some of the Sutras may not be complete and have tears, chip losses etc. We have photographed as much as possible for our website as they are delicate and we don't want too may people to handle them.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
