[Part 1-Part 2, vols. 1 and 2, lacking vol. 3- Part 3, vols. 1 and 3 only], 4to, engraved plates, including 13 double-paged, extra-illustrated by Joseph Crawhall with 41 mounted or tipped-in hand-written letters, 17 original water-colour views and vignettes, 14 photographic plates, 1 hand-coloured engraved map, and numerous coat-of-arms in water-colour, and several ‘Proof’ leaves with the author’s manuscript corrections bound-in, near contemporary red morocco with red, green and black morocco lettering pieces to the spines, t.e.g., Newcastle, 1820-1858. Note: the two volumes of Part 3 have no extra-illustrations and are bound in contemporary half calf, but both contain Joseph Crawhall’s bookplate. Joseph Crawhall II was an artist and antiquarian and the father of the ‘Glasgow Boys’ artist Joseph Crawhall III. This extensively extra-illustrated copy of Hodgson’s work also contains a mounted photograph of Esther Faa Blythe, Queen of the Gypsies, a 3pp. letter from Sir John Fenwick, letters to and from Sir Walter Blackett, a 3pp. copy of the will of Jane Leighton, letters from Lord Eldon, John Askew, Ralph Widdington, Isabel Anderton, elaborate coat-of-arms of James, Earl of Derwentwater and a letter dated 1815 from Lord Northumberland, relating to military matters.
