35.5 x 45.5cm
£500-800
After World War II D'Oyly John moved back to South Africa with his wife Joan. They moved to Durban and literally built their own house on Cowies HIll, in the Rondavel style, and named it 'Studio Cottage'.
See Kelleway & Mayhew - D'Oyly-John Living In The Sun, 2012 for further details of Studio Cottage
Condition:
Oil on board in honest untouched condition, needs a clean, slight marks around the edges where it has rubbed against framing, original artist label verso giving the title but spelling the name D'Oyly - D'Oyley John with the price 21 GNS and the address Studio Cottage, Cairns Hill. Apparently coconut palms do not grow in South Africa so the inclusion of one at that date suggests Doyly's imagination and memories of his time in Trinidad or Tobago.
