A pair of Chinese huali corner-leg low tables, Qing dynasty, the square three board panelled top with mitred mortice and tenon frame, above a recessed ‘waist’, the apron and legs carved in relief with archaistic taotie masks, scrolls and zoomorphic forms to the pierced corner spandrels, on four square legs and shaped feet, 64cm wide, 51cm high, re-polished and restored

Condition:
Both tables have been restored and re-polished by a European restorer. Both tables with considerable scratching and scuffing to the tops. The first table has shrinkage to the top and an inserted piece of timber approximately 12 mm wide added. There is a split to one of the legs at the top and there are some additional later European small sections of timber added to the reverse of the apron. The second table has shrinkage to the top and a later inserted strip of timber added which is 10 mm wide. There is also a small inserted section of replacement timber on one of the sections of framing of the top. The top has later stained softwood bracing glued in position underneath, remnants of old glue, legs a little wobbly on two corners.
