The 1914 HMS Ark Royal, was the first of four modern era vessels so named. The first ship was built in 1587 and was the flagship of Queen Elizabeth Ist's navy, famously engaged in the battle of 1588, to defeat the Spanish Armada.

The 1914 vessel was the first ship designed and built as a seaplane carrier, initially deployed in the First World War, in the Gallipoli campaign and the Dardanelles, she later saw service for aircraft transportation and as a training ship for seaplane pilots. In 1934 she was renamed HMS Pegasus, as her name was transferred to new aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (91), which was launched in 1937

Under the new name of HMS Pegasus, she was used in various capacities in World War Two, until being sold in 1946 and scrapped in 1949.

Provenance: Post World War Two, the bell was in the ownership of Wilfrid Treize Rougier-Chapman, Surgeon Commander R.N.V.R (1902-1981) and is now offered on behalf of a direct descendant.



There is no visible broad arrow or any foundary markings.
All ironwork is oxidised, main body of the bell equally oxidised and coloured with the original black enamelling mostly rubbed away from the naming. Clapper looks original but again oxidised but still remains serviceable. One patch showing on the inside edge of the bell.
