Lot 120 , A Chinese painted pottery standing figure of a Bactrian camel, Tang dynasty (618-906AD),
A Chinese painted pottery standing figure of a Bactrian camel, Tang dynasty (618-906AD), modelled with a saddle bag, with remnants of polychrome decoration, H.47cm, old restorations, together with a Thermoluminesence Analysis Report, Sample no.C116e91 from Oxford Authentication dated 10th May 2016
Estimate £800-1,200
As one would expect there is some restoration around the legs, neck and head where they have probably been detached at one stage, there is a feint crack along the nose and head of the camel running under his chin and down the neck, there is a feint crack around one side of the saddle pack where this has been re-attached, there are various feint cracks around the backside of the animal, the plinth base has been in half and restored and there is chipped gloss on the front left corner of the plinth. The TL test samples were taken from under the chin, the right buttock and under the saddle pack and all three examples yielded a similar result of an estimated firing date of between 900 and 1500 years ago.
