A small Chinese yellow and russet jade figure of a phoenix, 18th century, the recumbent phoenix with its head turned to preen beneath its right wing, its plumage finely detailed with incised lines and the legs tucked under the body, the stone of a pale yellow tone, the carver skillfully picking out the left wing, head and tail to the russet inclusion in the stone, 4.5cm

Provenance: Collected by the vendor's grandmother in Hong Kong or on her travels in mainland China before 1950.

Stone has natural veining to it, most visible to the head, top of the neck and the underside of the tail, good condition.
