17th century English School
oil on wooden panel,
Portrait of a young woman wearing pearls and a lace trimmed dress, holding a fan,
inscribed verso 'A young female of the family of Slowlege?',
24.5 x 18.5in.
Estimate £2,500-3,500

Oil on original wooden panel, two pronounced splits / separations in the panelling showing from the front, both running vertically down, one approx. 4 inches in from left hand side running just to the right of the pearl bracelet, the other opposite 3 inches in from the right hand side running through the edge of the base cuff, a further short split running at 12 o'clock just down towards to the top of her head, all of these appear to be old damage that has since been retouched but is now showing. Otherwise condition of paint looks to be good, would benefit from a very light clean, some spots of retouching notably in the margin at 3 o'clock, red ribbon over the fan looks to be later, in an 18th century gilt wood and gesso frame which is now drying out and starting to split and flake, one repair to the split panel clearly visible verso along with an old label giving some sort of attribution to the identity of the sitter.
