Oil on original canvas which is still tight but shows slight undulation, looks a little dirty with a broad but stable craquelure running through much of the paint and a little bitumous bubbling in the darker areas particularly above the recumbent dog, possibly a hint of a signature in the lower right corner however it is rather dark and I would not like to say for certain. Comes in probably the original 19th century gilt gesso frame which is rather dirty and has suffered a number of small losses. Attribution to artist inscribed on the back of the canvas, no further labels or inscriptions. Overall should restore to very good effect, quality of painting is fair to good, certainly better than many of the usual Armfield works that we come across.
