An interesting heavily embroidered silver and gold thread stump worked liturgical alter hanging, from the Convent of the Visitation, maybe originally from a convent in France. Embroidered in the 17th century style, with ornate baroque style raised embroidery and raised jewelled embroidered frame around a metal relief of Christ with a cross and orb, representing ‘the saviour’. The hanging framed in woven silver 18th/19th century braid with scalloped border. Hanging 67cm high x 63cm wide.

Made in the late 18th early 19th century with a later central plaque replacement to the original. A few acceptable minor pulls to braiding. The cream backing a recent addition.
