Born in Edo, Japan, Goseda Yoshimatsu began his artistic journey as a pupil of the British artist Charles Wirgman in 1866. He later studied with Italian painter Antonio Fontanesi. He is regarded as one of the first Japanese artists to adopt and practice Western painting techniques.
