Lot 176 , An early Victorian mahogany mantel timepiece

An early Victorian mahogany mantel timepiece

An early Victorian mahogany mantel timepiece with silvered Roman dial and unsigned single fusee eight day movement, 15.5cm wide, 11cm deep, 25cm high
£300-500

Condition:
The movement is not original to the case and is probably a late 19th or early 20th century replacement. The case appears to have been originally intended for a pendulum driven anchor escapement. The winding hole on the face is now covered by a blanking plate and the later movement is driven by a balance escapement. The movement is not going at the time of cataloguing and may require servicing or cleaning, etc. Generally a quality piece in fair condition but with some small faults, rosewood is of a dark rich brownish tone, short splits running to the front panel around the dial with a patched repair near the hinge, no key present, brass bezel is not locked, some oxidisation to the dial, hands look original, back door with original lock but no key, movement looks complete but not tested for timekeeping.
