Condition:
The lower of the two hinged slopes has an inset brass maker’s plaque engraved Wells & Co., Manufacturers, Cockspur Street, London, who seem to date to circa 1801-14. The box contains two hand-written notes giving some possible provenance. Top with brass stringing lifting; one side with faded patches; otherwise externally good. Interior contains a bone lozenge escutcheon and three bone knop handles. Cloth-lined slope worn at hinge; original key to secure box to a ship’s table-top. Generally good.
