§ Forrest Hewit (British, 1870-1956)
'The Calico Printers Ball, 1887'
oil on canvas
signed with exhibition label verso
121 x 161cm
£2,000-3,000

Condition:
Forrest Hewit was a Director of the Calico Printer’s Association which is depicted in the painting , an event held in the newly built Manchester Town Hall, designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1877. The subject was apparently taken from a daguerreotype of the period and whilst obviously being of particular interest to Forrest Hewit as he was President of the Association, by the 1930’s it would have been a pretty anachronous scene for him to paint. Oil on original canvas in honest untouched condition, might benefit from a clean but no real faults noted, signed lower left, remnant of an exhibition label in the lower left corner, housed in a white overpainted frame, artist label applied to back of the canvas with the title and date inscribed in ink, remnant of an RBA label on the back of the frame.
