Lot 1404 , A Chinese Export pseudo armorial oval dish, c.1760, possibly of Jesuit significance, 25cms wide
A Chinese Export pseudo armorial oval dish, c.1760, possibly of Jesuit significance, 25cms wide the pseudo armorial with a tree stump within an elaborate cartouche over the motto "Tan Toube Rior"; the reverse painted with flower sprays and a bamboo border. For another piece from this service see David S. Howard, "The Choice of the Private Trader" (London: Zwemmer, 1994) pp. 132-33. Howard states, “This is part of an elaborate service exactly copying a Meissen original, all pieces with similar decoration but bearing a large number of different pseudo armorials and mottoes. In spite of considerable research, their meaning remains obscure, but it is thought they could have Jesuit significance.”
