Circle of John Wessop (fl.1640-1652)
oil on canvas
Full length portrait of a young lady, standing beside a lap dog, a country house beyond
64 x 47in.
Estimate £4,000-6,000
Oil on canvas cleaned and relined perhaps within the past 10 -20 years or so, canvas remains tight, paint might benefit from a light clean, there is a little light fine craquelure running through much of the paint but most notably through the figure, dog and her costume, less notably through the red painted areas which may have seen some retouching, most notable fault is a circular hole nearly punched through the canvas just below the sitter's neck, 1.75 inches and perfectly circular with consequent paint loss around it, this does not pierce right through the re-lining, no sign of any signature, housed in a tatty black painted frame, no labels verso but Christie's stencil 273XT. Comes for sale from a deceased estate.
