A 4 inch weighted wooden Jaques chess set , ebony and boxwood, in original mahogany box, label under lid "The Staunton Chessmen - J.Jaques & Son Ltd. London. England " dates it from the early 1900.

The white boxwood pieces:-
One of the pawns has a broken collar with a replacement section which has been coloured in to match, which is now slightly discoloured. One knight and one rook are stamped with a red crown to the top and the king is stamped around the foot JAQUES LONDON
The black side:-
One of the knights has a small chip to the back of its mane behind its head, the second knight has a chip loss to its left ear, one of the bishops has a splinter chip to the edge of the slanted cut in the finial. One of the pawns has a small chip to its collar below the finial and the Queen has a chip loss to one of the points of the crown collar. One knight and one rook are stamped in red with a crown and the king is stamped JAQUES LONDON.
The top of the box is stamped M.S. and the cover is slightly off kilter and the corners of the box have expanded the joints slightly and somebody has put a single nail in each side on the corners to keep it in position where the dry glue has probably dried out. Some scuffing and scratching also to the box.
