Steele and Kathleen Shackleton (1884-1961 Ernest Shackleton's sister) the latter stating "The officers had sled flags presented to them by their loving women in the Scott 1901 Expedition. These flags were their family arms. Ernest's had the Shackleton motto "Fortitudine Vincimus" on his and the boat of his 1914 expedition was named the "Endurance", Kathleen Shackleton"., front fly leaf of vol. 2 with owner's inscription repeated, above a further inscription by Kathleen Shackleton - "Let a man contend to the uttermost for his life's set prize, be what it will", "The Statue and the Bust", - Robert Browning
