Oil on board which has a very slight inward bowing, some fine but stable vertical lines of craquelure running through the centre of the work, some signs of retouching particularly around the sky to the right, but also to the left above the horses heads where it looks like some dents or knocks have been retouched, one small area of flaking in the grey horses flank along with some other small losses to the right of this, title plaque on the later burr wood frame listing it as Bradford Art Gallery 1872 although the work is clearly dated 1879.
