Lot 235 , A 19th century French bronze and ormolu timepiece, height 5.5in. width 6.25in.
A 19th century French bronze and ormolu timepiece, modelled with a frog riding a snail, height 5.5in. width 6.25in.
Estimate £300-500
Wear to the case from polishing over the years with the green paint rubbed away from the frog and the gilding rubbed from the bronze of the snail shell and elsewhere, looks like the frog at one time had the front part of a riding crop or similar extending from the right hand, this is now missing, snail has two tiny turquoise inserts to either side of the head, probably had additional gems set into represent eyes, the tip of one of these is now broken away, dial a little dirty but otherwise looks original and intact, with numerals and enamelling looking original, hinges out at the front to reveal what looks like a typical late 19th century Swiss watch movement that is not going. Joints between the snail and plinth are a little wobbly but still retain the original tightening nuts beneath.
