A Jaques & Son Staunton chess set, in ebony and boxwood, kings 4.25in., in original labelled box with plaque to the lid inscribed LLCCC F Dickens 1st Prize 1917, 9.25in.

Box with light outer surface scratching but essentially good order, internal label a little rubbed, the chessmen:
Boxwood - all of a fairly dark colour with wear and fading from regular use, King has lost half of his cross finial, Queen has nibbling the tips of her coronet, one castle with a small nick out of the foot, the other with the castle stamp to the top. 2 knights with the tip of ear missing, one bishop with finial missing and broken away, pawns look good.
Ebony - King with half his cross finial broken away and two chunks out of the footrim, Queen with nibbling to her coronet, bishops - one with side of finial missing, knights with damage ears and both with sections of foot rim broken away, castles - one with two sections broken away from the foot rim, pawns - four with varying amounts of sections broken away from the collars, one pawn looks to be a replacement, is a little smaller than the others in all dimensions, all have later baize lining, box also has later baize lining.
