Lot 656 , Victorian School Full length portrait of a gentleman seated in his library 24 x 20in.
Victorian School
oil on canvas
Full length portrait of a gentleman seated in his library
24 x 20in.
Estimate £200-300
Oil on original canvas which shows some slight undulation at the bottom. Rather shiny almost crystaline varnish coates the work which is also very dirty. With a broad but stable craquelure running throughout the paint, this looks to contain some bitumous bubbling. A trace of printed paper has been applied over work level with the top of the desk, patches of print remain visible, no idea why this is done, appears to be later and can be seen lower down in work as well. Can only guess that this was pressed against something when being varnished at some point. Needs a good clean and should remain a decorative work of reasonable quality.
