Note: Francis Palmes came from an Irish family and began a long military career when he was granted a captain's commission in Lord Cavendish's Horse (7 Drag. Guards) in 1688. He served under Marlborough at Blenheim when one report stated that 'hardly any one was more instrumental to the success of the day' than Palmes. His success in the field attracted the patronage of Marlborough which led to his promotion to major general in 1707. After a brief term as an MP for West Looe he carried out a number of diplomatic missions, in the pursuance of which he eventually died in Dresden. This work is believed to be the only known portrait of Francis Palmes.

Oil on canvas relined within the past 10 years or so, canvas remains tight, paint looks clean, a little old stable craquelure running through the skin tones, signs of odd spots of retouching in the margins, period giltwood frame with some losses and cracks which has been later painted.
