Oil on original canvas in good honest untouched condition, has not been relined, probably not even cleaned at any stage in its life, the canvas remains tight, paint does look a little dirty with some blooming of the varnish in the darker areas showing now as slightly whiteish tones notable around the figures and the sheep, other that this no other faults noted. Signed lower left, under glass which has a number of dirt marks on the inside and housed in the original gilt gesso frame which has the title 'The First of May' on the slip and suffers from numerous small damages around the edges of the scroll framing, old label verso for Knight of London, Dealer in Works of Art, the letters that come with this lot are from the early owner of the work writing to the artist about it and the artist writing back offering to paint them more pictures.
