Lot 26 , A scrimshaw whales tooth, 5.5in.
A scrimshaw whale's tooth, decorated with a pipe smoker reading a paper and three young ladies, entitled 'Concordia', 5.5in.
Estimate £200-300
The inscription 'Concordia' possibly refers to the 19th century U.S. whaling ship of the same name. The Concordia was abandoned and later burned by native Eskimos after she was trapped in ice on Sept. 14th 1871. This 128 feet long three mast whaling vessel carried a cargo of 650 barrels of whale oil and was based from the port of New Bedford, Massachusetts.
