Oil on original canvas which has been re-stretched and reinforced from behind with some sort of paint or varnish rather than a canvas reline, the canvas remains a little saggy showing some slight undulation particularly towards the curve of the sitter's hair at 10 o'clock, paint is thickly applied with a stable craquelure running through all of the dark and red paint but not really evidence in the right, further to this the paint also looks rather dirty, there is one small loss of paint showing as a small speck between approx 3 inches away from 2 o'clock, this small flake paint approx 2 x 3mm has been covered by retouching the bare canvas, the signature is indistinct but in the lower left corner, otherwise the work is housed in possibly the original parcel gilt ebonised frame which equally looks a little dented,
