Lot 766 , An early 18th century silver pair cased repeating verge pocket watch by David Lestourgeon, London,
An early 18th century silver pair cased repeating verge pocket watch by David Lestourgeon, London, with associated pierced outer case embossed with scrolls and cherubs and later ceramic Roman dial, the inner case with pierced scroll decoration and engraved with grotesque mask, the signed movement numbered 3145, (a.f.).
Estimate £400-600
The dial and hands are a replacement. The current dial is also quite badly damaged, in the form of cracks and chips. We beilieve that the outer case probably didn't start life with the inner case as there is some play when in situ. There appears to be a couple of small pieces of silver within the scrolling decoration now missing on the outer case. The piece was probably gilded at some point as there are vague remnants of the original gilding in some places. The outer case has a worn engarved crest. The pierecd work on the inner case is damaged in at least two areas (splits/dents), one more prominent than the other. Again the gilding is quite worn. The pendant may be a replacement. The movement appears complete but is not currently working, so we are unable to conform what kind of repeating function it has. The balance wheel barely moves, so assume there is an issue with the balance staff also. We cannot guarantee any of the watches to be in working order.
