Lot 625 , An early 18th century featherbanded walnut bureau, W.3ft 2in.
An early 18th century featherbanded walnut bureau, the fall front revealing a stepped interior with sliding well above an arrangement of six drawers, on bracket feet, W.3ft 2in.
Estimate £600-800
This looks to have had an extensive restoration in the 1970's when a repolish, repairs to the veneers, new edging to the fall, a new leather skiver and new cockbeading to the drawers took place.
Since then the piece has stood in sunlight and it now requires a complete overhaul and restoration due to the following faults;
top faded with some missing veneer, splits and one old patch.
The fall is splitting across the middle (this also shows on the inside) with raised veneers to the right.
Interior faded, a small groove cut into the top of the well. Skiver faded.
Brassware looks a little heavy. The top drawers show small patches where drop handles were once fitted. The current handles are screwed on from the front (no sign of previous handle fixings from inside any of the drawers).
Sides have some vertical splitting and some lost patches of veneer.
Later feet, also with some knocks and veneer losses.
