A Japanese Satsuma pottery large koro and cover, signed Gyokuzan, Meiji period, the compressed ovoid body painted with a the seven gods of happiness, animals and objects emblematic of them with diaper and brocade pattern borders, inscription to neck, the pierced dome cover with shi-shi final, six character seal mark to base, 38cm, slight damage

There is a crack to the rim which branches off in two directions, one fairly short, the other extending down to the cylindrical part of the neck, the interior of the koro is heavily stained but this does not show on the exterior except at the very base, one corner of a handle has been broken out and restuck approx 1 x 1cm, the other handle has a shallow chip loss measuring 1.5cm x 0.5cm. The cover has some small chip losses to the points of the shi-shi finial and some slight wear, there is a crack extending from one of the piercings to the rim with some slight flaking around the area, another extending upwards from the same piercing towards the finial there is a very fine crack, there is some staining to the craquelure on the inside of the cover which does show slightly on the cream ground at the top of the cover, otherwise good condition.
