Lot 1269 , School of Girolamo Dai Libri (1474-1555) Virgin and child with attendants, 19 x 14.5in.
School of Girolamo Dai Libri (1474-1555)
oil on wooden panel,
Virgin and child with attendants,
19 x 14.5in.
Estimate £500-700
Oil on an old thick wooden panel which slightly curves inwards at the sides, paint overall looks clean with traces of fine vertical craquelure running through the paint most notably the darker areas but generally throughout the work with the exception of the pink tones of the cherub and infant, one shallow dented scratch in the neck of the left hand figure, a further dented scratch beneath the hands of the cherub and another just above the hands of the Virgin, all are fairly shallow but do go into the gesso but not the panel. Back of panel shows extensive old worm holes and two bracing struts, in an old giltwood frame which suffers similarly from worm holes and minor surface dents and damage with some loss at the edge of the top right corner, a later title plaque has been applied to the frame with the attribution. Overall this work appears to be an old picture that has seen fairly heavy cleaning and doubtless some retouching over the years, however nothing shows under our UV light, given the amount of cleaning and work we think has been applied we would view this as more of a decorative work rather than an original Old Master.
